NEW
EXHIBITION MAKES A CLEAN SWEEP AT THE CORINIUM MUSEUM
Everyday appliances
from history will be dusted down for How Clean Is Your House?
– a great new exhibition at the Corinium Museum, Cirencester.
The interactive exhibition,
which starts on Saturday, September 10th, takes a fond and nostalgic
look at housework through the decades.
On show will be items
donated from homes across the Cotswolds, including the Star
– one of the earliest vacuum cleaners from c. 1910 –
and The Animal – the very latest technology on loan from
Dyson.
Visitors will have
the opportunity to try out a dolly tub, beat a rag rug and make
their own firelighters – not to mention the chance to
find out how to use a posser.
Collections Manager
Judy Mills said: “This is a fun exhibition which uses
material from our social history collections that is not currently
on display.
“The emphasis
is on cleaning and the objects will show the how mammoth changes
in technology have taken the place of elbow grease over the
years.
“Just a simple
look at the humble vacuum cleaner and the advances that have
been made, can show very clearly just how life has changed since
our great grandmothers kept house!
“Many young
under 40 won’t have heard of a dolly tub, let alone washed
their clothes in one, although they were still being advertised
in 1940s Britain.”
The exhibition, which
runs until January 7, 2006, also offers handy household hints
and the chance to identify mystery household objects.
Entry is included
in the admission price to the Museum, or pay £1 to see
the exhibition only.
