Siddington Celebrates the Roaring 40s in Style!
This year marks the 65th anniversary of VE Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Over the weekend of the 8th and 9th May, the village of Siddington will be celebrating this momentous occasion in style. Throughout the weekend, the village will be pushing the boat out with a trip back in time, with events planned to delight all the family.
During the afternoon of Saturday 8th May, there will be military themed side shows and a display of vintage vehicles on the village playing field. As part of this, a bus will be taking people backwards and forwards to visit the Air Raid shelter museum in Cirencester, a unique survivor of our local history. Sheunique vintage clothes of Cirencester will be on hand to create authentic 1940s hairstyles.
On Saturday evening, a Roaring 40s Dance in the Village Hall will recreate the era and celebrate wartime dress, food, music and dancing. Siddington residents Jackie and Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen will be special guests. For just £20, you can enjoy traditional fish and chips followed by wartime puddings like Spotted Dick and Apple Pie. Take a step back in time with dancing to the AJL Show band with all the wartime sounds of the Lindy Hop and the Foxtrot. Tickets for this event will be on sale at Siddington Village Post Office and Stores throughout April.
On Sunday 9th May, a Drumhead Service will be held at Upper Siddington House to mark this significant and moving anniversary.
Throughout the weekend, raffle tickets will be sold in aid of Siddington Village Hall. Top prize donations are expected from many local companies, as well as the Llewelyn-Bowens themselves. “We are really looking forward to Siddington’s VE Day weekend. It marks the anniversary of something so significant in the history of our Country. It was a time when communities came together in celebration which is something we can all take a lesson from today, so we hope to see as many people in Siddington as possible, sharing our freedom and remembering the ultimate price so many paid” says Laurence.
The raffle draw will take place after the Drumhead Service on Sunday.
