Detail:
This talk examines the origins of the smaller towns of the county, most of which had their origin during the 12th and 13th centuries when an expanding economic climate encouraged many lords of manors to try and upgrade their local villages to market towns. Using among other examples Northleach, Stow, and Lechlade, it describes the process of setting up a new market town, and assesses the economic and geographical factors that enabled some new foundations to survive as successful trading centres while others failed to realize their founders’ plans. From 1970 until 2003 Nicholas Herbert was County Editor of the Victoria History of Gloucestershire. Please call 01285 655611 to book.
