Corinium Radio's First Broadcast Hailed A Success

Cirencester's first Community Radio station, Corinium Radio, took to the airwaves last weekend and has been hailed as a great success by all involved and the many listeners who phoned in their messages of support over the weekend.

Corinium Radio was the second of a series of projects set up to offer communities in Gloucestershire a chance to explore what a radio station created by local people sounds like.

Funded by the Gloucestershire Arts Advisory Group, Arts Council South West and Cotswold District Council, the project comprised of a two day broadcast with the theme of celebrating Cirencester’s history, present and ambition.

Cotswold District Council’s Leisure Officer Claire Newport said: “Corinium Radio was the result of 12 weeks preparation, training and organisation by a group of local volunteers who all have a passion for radio and the town of Cirencester. The broadcasts featured literally hundreds of different voices all contributing to what was a great weekend of varied shows.”

Programmes featured people as young as five years old and included contributions from schools, arts organisations, after school clubs, students, local historians, the Bingham Library plus many other organisations, clubs and societies.

Following the success of this pilot project a meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 17th May at 7pm to discuss ways to take the idea forward and work towards future broadcasts. The meeting, to be held at Cotswold District Council’s offices In Trinity Road, Cirencester, is open to all with an interest in continuing the project.
