Second Phase of Subway Painting Project To Start

The second stage of an ambitious painting project will get going next week as budding young graffiti artists add their artwork to an underpass in Cirencester.

The Chesterton underpass, which links Chesterton Lane with Deer Park School and Cirencester College, will be given a makeover when an on-going project to paint it in a ‘street-art’ style runs from Monday July 13th-14th.

This time, it is the turn of pupils from Deer Park School to adorn the underpass with their artwork, after students from Cirencester College added their street-art to the subway in January.

The Deer Park pupils will work alongside professional graffiti artists for the second stage of the scheme, which will last from 9am-3pm on the two days. Pedestrians will still be able to use the subway via a cordoned-off walkway.

The project was first launched in 2006 when students at nearby Deer Park School painted the subway during their Enrichment Week, but following an act of vandalism in 2008 – which wrecked parts of the artwork – it was painted white.

Cotswold District Council is one of several partners on the project, which also includes Deer Park School, Cirencester College, the Chesterton Project, local businesses and Gloucestershire Police.

The funding for this stage of the project has come from The Ernest Cook Trust, a charitable body that supports educational and research projects, especially those relating to the countryside and conservation.

The underpass is owned by Gloucestershire County Council, who is responsible for its structure and upkeep. It is hoped the underpass can continue to be decorated on a regular basis.
