Still time to sign up for Green Waste Service

Almost half of the residents in the Cotswolds have now subscribed to the Council’s paid-for garden and food waste collection service, and there’s still time to sign up!

The fifth year of the service starts on Monday April 2nd, and CDC is pleased that so many householders have decided to take advantage of the offer. Everyone participating will help contribute to the Council’s impressive recycling/composting rate of over 60% - yet again one of the top five in the UK.

The Council has pegged the cost of the service for 2012-13 at £30 per licence to use the green garden waste wheeled bins. Those signing up will have their garden waste collected weekly, and they will also be able to empty their unwanted food waste into the green bin.

Additional licences can be purchased for a further £30 each per year. Additionally, for those who cannot accommodate a green wheeled bin at their property, 50 compostable brown paper garden waste sacks can also be purchased for £30 (available from the Council’s Trinity Road offices or at the Moreton Area Centre)

Residents who receive Council Tax or Housing Benefit are entitled to a 50% discount.

Scott Williams, Cotswold District Council’s Waste Manager, said: "Yet again, almost 50% of the households in the Cotswolds have decided to subscribe to this service. This bodes well for the future as we strive to remain in the top five recycling authorities in the country. It would be great if even more people sign up to help us save precious resources, combat climate change and reduce the amount of landfill taxes.”

“Processed organic waste collected in Gloucestershire, including the food and garden waste collected from Cotswold residents, is now being sold to the public as a soil improver. It is available from all County Household Recycling Facilities, including Fosse Cross, at a bargain price of £2.50 for a 40 litre sack. Experts have advised that the quality of the material is so good that it shouldn’t be used directly as compost, but rather as a conditioner to be dug in with existing soil.”
