Corinium Museum To Reach For The Stars

An insight into the sky and stars will be held at the Corinium Museum this month when Professor Clive Ruggles hosts a talk about Archaeoastronomy.

The special lecture – part of the Museum’s Evening Lecture Series – ties in with this year’s celebrations for the International Year of Astronomy and will examine the links between archaeology and the ancient skies. The talk is being held on Thursday March 26th from 7pm-8.30pm.

Archaeoastronomy is the study of beliefs and practices concerning the sky in the past. It gives us insights into ancient race’s perceptions of space, time and the cosmos, and is relevant to studies of myth, ritual, religion and calendars.

This wide-ranging talk will feature case studies from many different parts of the world, including Clive’s ongoing field projects in Europe, Peru and Hawaii, and will identify some of the key questions and issues facing archaeoastronomy today.

Clive Ruggles is Emeritus Professor of Archaeoastronomy at the University of Leicester and is President of the Prehistoric Society.

His books include ‘Skywatching in the Ancient World: New Perspectives in Cultural Astronomy’, ‘Ancient Astronomy: An Encyclopaedia of Cosmologies and Myth and ‘Astronomy in Prehistoric Britain and Ireland’.

Tickets for the talk cost £5 and booking is essential. For further information on the talk on any of the Corinium Museum’s events, please contact the venue on 01285 655611 or email
