Council Hosts A Tree-mendous Celebration

The Cotswold Tree Warden Group is organising a prestigious tree awards ceremony at the Cotswold District Council offices on Saturday 20th March.

The Wardens conducted an inter-parish competition recently to highlight some of the splendid trees around the Cotswold region. Independent judges viewed a wide selection of trees against a range of categories including: most fruit-laden; most interesting history; rarity; most colourful foliage; and most unusual bark.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Mrs Carole Topple, who will present prizes to the winners at the ceremony, said: "The sheer range of species on show has reminded me how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country."

Her thoughts were echoed by Councillor Mark Tufnell, the Cabinet Member for the Environment and Communities, who added: “I had the great privilege of assisting on the judging panel and I was bowled over by the quality of the trees that we viewed. The Tree Wardens do a great job and I very much hope that these awards will boost their efforts."

The prize giving event will begin at 9.30 a.m. at the Council’s Trinity Road offices. Following the ceremony and refreshments, there is an added bonus in the form of a short talk at 11.00 am by Guy Watson of Certhia Consulting, focusing on pests and diseases affecting trees. There will also be a diagnostic session enabling participants to bring their own examples for examination.

All members of the press are welcome to attend.
