Plastic Is Drastic - Don't Use It For Food Waste
Cotswold District Council is urging local residents to use newspaper or approved compostable bags if they wish to line the food waste container that is provided as part of the Council’s weekly organic waste collection scheme. Containers using plastic or other non-compostable liners will not be collected from 12th April onwards.
The Council’s refuse contractor, SITA, is cracking down on the use of plastic bags to line the 10-litre food waste containers and will refuse to empty those using non-compostable liners from 12th April onwards. The problem has arisen because householders have mistakenly assumed that biodegradable plastic bags would be suitable as liners, and this has made it extremely difficult for the County Council’s In-Vessel Composting company to process the food waste effectively. In extreme instances, organic waste could be contaminated to the extent that it would have to be sent to landfill.
Scott Williams, the Council’s Waste Manager, commented: "The weekly collection of food waste for composting is a key element of Cotswold District Council’s recycling drive and we are keen to work with residents to make this easy and painless.
"It’s natural that residents will want to keep their food waste containers clean, and we would remind them that – should they wish to line them - they must use newspaper or liners made from corn starch and displaying the compostable logo. I can understand why they might get confused by ‘biodegradable’ labels on plastic bags and jump to the conclusion that they are compostable. However, they are highly unsuitable, even though they may appear to be a little more environmentally friendly than conventional plastic bags."
Scott has recommended a number of local retailers who sell authorised compostable bags, and has also reminded some householders that the food waste containers are dish washer safe should users wish to do without liners and undertake a weekly clean once the containers have been emptied.
