Get To Grips With The Past at Corinium Museum

Adults can reminisce on times gone by with a handful of historical workshops and lectures being held at the Corinium Museum in May and June.

As part of Adult Learners Week (May 15th-21st), the Cirencester museum will host two creative writing sessions; ‘Inspired by the Past – Prose’ on Monday May 17th, followed by the ‘Inspired by the Past – Poetry’ workshop on Friday May 21st.

Using objects from the fascinating Roman history collections at the Museum for inspiration, the sessions will show participants how to use the ancient artefacts to trigger highly imaginative works of poetry and prose.

Both events are from 2-5pm and will be led by Gloucestershire-based poet and creative writing tutor Anna Saunders, who is also the Director of the 2010 Cheltenham poetry festival.

The workshops are suitable for writers of any experience. Tickets cost £10 and booking is essential.

Sandwiched between these two courses is the lecture ‘A Victorian Rector and Nine Old Maids’ on Wednesday May 19th, which will focus on the life of the Le Marchant family from Little Rissington.

Lecturer Mike Boyes will tell this fascinating tale of a Victorian parson and his 15 spirited children, paying particular attention to his nine unmarried daughters and their unconventional social lives.

A final Mike Boyes talk will take place on Wednesday June 2nd entitled ‘The Adventurous Lives of Five Cotswold Brothers’. This lecture, again focusing on the Le Marchant family, will explore the globe-trotting adventures and exploits of five brothers from 1870-1918, including their roles in the army and navy, as well as their many unusual experiences.

The Corinium Museum holds some of the original photo albums of the Le Marchant family and these will be available to view at the events.

Both of the Mike Boyes talks are from 2.30-4pm. Tickets for these talks cost £5, or £4.50 for annual season ticket holders and Friends of the Corinium Museum. Booking is essential.

For more information on any of the talks or workshops above, please call the museum on 01285 655611 or visit www.cotswold.gov.uk/go/museum
