Waste collections cancelled this week due to icy weather. Emergency Collection Points established.

"We are aiming to get back on track with the double collections and trust that residents will understand our concerns about safety during this exceptionally icy weather"
Cllr David Fowles, CDC Cabinet Member for the Environment

Whilst most main roads are now clear, many side roads, paths and pavements in the Cotswolds remain hazardous following last week’s heavy snowfall on Friday and continuing sub-zero temperatures which have resulted in compacted ice remaining on many surfaces.

Consequently, as a result of the continuing freezing weather, Cotswold District Council and its waste contractor, Ubico Ltd, regret that they have had to cancel all collections this week i.e. Monday 21 January to Friday 25 January. All residents who were missed between 18-25 January will receive a ‘double collection’ a fortnight later on their next scheduled collection date.

Residents are encouraged to keep their waste until the next scheduled collection. Ubico will be able to pick up any additional non recyclable waste and recycling accumulated during this period. Please ensure that additional non recyclable waste is placed in refuse sacks and put out beside the closed wheeled bin (i.e. with the bin lid firmly down - to enable safe handling by collectors).

In addition, extra recycling materials should be placed in a suitable alternative box/bag and placed out alongside normal recycling containers.

There is also the option of taking recyclable waste - such as tins, glass and newspapers - to bring banks around the district if householders do not wish to wait for their next kerbside collections.

Residents can also take their bagged non-recyclable waste and kitchen waste to the following three emergency waste pick up points which will currently be operating between 8 am and 2 pm on: Wednesday 23 January, Thurday 24 January, and Friday 25 January.
Cirencester Lorry Park
Fairford – High Street Car Park
Lechlade – Town Council Offices

Ubico are asking the public to respect the opening times of the sites and not to leave bags there when it is clear that operations have ceased. They will be erecting signs to warn about the dangers of leaving waste in the car parks unattended.

CDC and Ubico officials are assessing conditions on a daily basis and will continue to provide updates on the council’s website www.cotswold.gov.uk and in the media.

Commenting on these measures, Cllr David Fowles, CDC Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:
“I hope that establishing these emergency points will bring some relief for householders. Obviously it is very frustrating when their bins are not emptied, but we have to minimise the risk to the general public, property owners and Ubico staff. We are aiming to get back on track with the double collections and trust that residents will understand our concerns about safety during this exceptionally icy weather. I must also point out that people can also use the Household Recycling Centre at Fosse Cross and our recycling banks across the district if they want to offload their waste and recycling earlier than the double collection dates.”

Any queries regarding CDC collections should be directed to the waste hotline on 01285 623 123.

Please note that all Household Recycling Centres across the county are open seven days a week from 9 am to 6.15 pm. The nearest one for most Cotswold residents is at Fosse Cross (just off the A429 near Calmsden). The site operates a booking system for those wishing to deposit waste from vans, pick-ups or vehicles with trailers with a load space larger than 6 ft x 4 ft. To make a reservation for these types of loads, or if you have any other queries, please telephone 0845 602 9344.

The Cotswold District Council offices in Trinity Road, Cirencester, the Moreton Area Centre, Cotswold Leisure facilities, and the Corinium Museum remain open for business as usual.
