CDC to host ‘Painted Cotswolds’ awards ceremony for young local artists

Budding artists from local Cotswold schools will be honoured at a ‘Painted Cotswolds’ prize giving ceremony taking place at Cotswold District Council on Friday 20 September.

Award-winning local artist Darren Baker will announce the winners of a competition to depict the Cotswolds at a ceremony which will take place from 1 pm on Friday 20 September in the Cotswold District Council Chamber (Trinity Road, Cirencester) Students from primary and secondary schools around the district were invited to submit entries and a panel of judges, including Darren, has now chosen the winning entries. The first prize will be an i-pad, and runners-up will be presented with vouchers for art materials courtesy of Grimes House Antiques and Fine Art of Moreton-in-Marsh. There are also plans for many of the artworks submitted to be displayed to the public. Additionally, the overall winning entry will be reproduced as a card and sold to raise funds for Gloucestershire Young Carers and the Stroke Association, which are the official charities of the Council Chairman, Sir Edward Horsfall. .

Darren Baker - who is rapidly emerging as one of the most talented artists of his generation - has also pledged his support for the Chairman’s charities. To raise funds, the artist plans to create and sell ‘The Painted Cotswolds’ - a still life painting based on the pupils’ paintings and a CDC-run campaign to gauge the public’s perception of the things they most like about the district.

Darren will firstly produce a preparatory drawing which will be auctioned to benefit the Chairman’s charities. He will then aim to complete his ‘Painted Cotswolds’ painting next year and it will be sold at public auction to raise money for the charities. Darren will also award one of a limited edition of prints to the winning school in the art competition.
