Corinium Museum and Cirencester College Score 10!

Staff at Corinium Museum and students from Cirencester College have been praised to the skies for their recent contribution to the nationwide Museums at Night campaign.

Things couldn’t have gone much better for Cirencester’s contribution to Museums at Night on Friday 14th May, which included museum staff and students from Cirencester College donning Saxon and Roman costumes to take on the roles of ancient characters and bring the exhibits to life – sometimes in a thrillingly scary way. The evening also featured exhibitions of the students’ work, a selection of photographs from Deer Park School pupils, and a showing of the ‘Night at the Museum’ movie.

After featuring on the BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine show on Friday lunchtime, Internet sites like Facebook and Twitter picked up on the fun things planned at the museum in the evening and the national publicity increased bookings by 50%.

Judy Mills, the Collections Management Officer at the museum, said: "This has been a triumph for the museum and the College. In particular, it was great to see so many newcomers at the Corinium, and their feedback has been very upbeat. We asked visitors to use a word to describe their experience and answers included ‘alive, stimulating, inspiring, and great’. Even better, 75% of the respondents rated the event 10/10."

Judy also highlighted the praise received from the national Culture24 website which had commented: "For extraordinary dedication to costumed flamboyance, the team at the Corinium Museum in Cirencester have come up trumps for Museums at Night." The website also paid tribute to the "legion of volunteers" who made the evening such a success.

It seems likely that the Corinium will be doing something similar after hours in the future. According to Judy: "We have a hard act to follow – but we’re so pleased with the way this has gone that we are all willing to give it a go."
