Rugby star formally opens Cotswold Leisure Centre
Gloucester Rugby and World Cup rugby star Mike Tindall formally opened the Cotswold Leisure Centre, Cirencester, on Sunday, July 23rd.
Mike was presented with lifetime membership of the Cotswold District Council-owned facility by Chairman Cllr Sue Jepson and Centre Manager Andrea North.
He toured the building, tried out state-of-the-art gym equipment and praised the centre as "outstanding".
Before unveiling a plaque to mark the official opening, he told guests he was impressed by the Council's commitment to providing a purpose-built leisure centre for local people.
He said: "The facilities are outstanding. Although my training is mostly done as part of a team, I'm sure you will see me popping in from time to time."
Mike then joined Gloucester Rugby Community coaches, Gary Little, Andy Brown and Paul Rudland who led a rugby-based circuit session in the sports hall for centre regulars and players from Cirencester Rugby Club.
Cllr Jepson said: "It was great fun to watch. Mike made it all look so easy - it is not difficult to see why he was part of England's World Cup winning team.
"It was a great privilege to welcome Mike to the Centre and we hope his membership will encourage him to become a regular user, especially as he lives in the county.
"The event was well supported by guests from Gloucestershire local authorities, District councillors, staff, the architects and construction team. I'd like to thank our staff for all their work on making the new centre a success - it is obviously a winner!"
The leisure centre, in Tetbury Road, opened to the public in April and features a 25-metre by six-lane pool, a small pool, a gym, three squash courts, a six-court sports hall, sauna, steam and relaxation area, fitness/dance studio and coffee shop.
Since opening day on April 4th, customers have clocked up more than 40,000 swims and around 20,000 more have taken part in swimming lessons. Users have played 4,000 games of squash, 3050 badminton matches and made 16,000 visits to the gym.
Nearly 6,000 people have attended fitness classes and more than 2,750 visits have been made to the Relax Zone.
