Youngsters Flock to the Corinium Museum

Over 250 children across the Cotswold district enjoyed an abundance of creative activities at the Corinium Museum and local libraries during the February half-term break. March also promises to be a bumper month with a free Prehistoric Arts exhibition and more activity sessions on offer.

Some 200 children enjoyed a range of February half-term activities at Corinium Museum, Cirencester, including: metals and mirrors; stretchy animals; fabric painting fun; and sunshine masks. The fun sessions encouraged them to explore history and heritage while pursuing hands-on craft sessions with museum staff.

Libraries across the Cotswolds were also busy during half-term with a total of 60 young people exploring prehistoric art and creating their own crazy cave paintings. The paintings will now form part of the forthcoming ‘Creation Prehistoric Arts’ temporary exhibition. The exhibition, staged by students from Cirencester College, marks the culmination of a 12-month Heritage Lottery-funded Young Roots project, enabling them to explore Gloucestershire’s heritage and develop their own exhibition.

As part of the exhibition, the organisers will also profile creations made by young Cheltenham-based students from Balcarras School and Bournside School, working with the Holst Birthplace Museum and Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum respectively.
The exhibition opens on Saturday February 27th and admission to the temporary gallery is free.

Finally, the Museum has lots of events and activities planned for March, including ‘Digging Dinosaurs’, a National Science and Engineering Week event and many more activities for young people over the Easter holidays. Details are available on the website www.cotswold.gov.uk/go/museum or by telephoning 01285 655611.
