Family Tribute to Pete David Gentil
The family of Pete Gentil, who died following a collision on the B4425 on Saturday September 14, have released a tribute to the man they called “one of life’s good guys”.
“Pete Gentil – devoted husband to Sarah, beloved father and best friend to Charlie and Fred, brother and best friend to Paul and Chris, rock music lover and bassist in Dealer, passionate and experienced motorcyclist, but above all, a wonderful, kind-hearted guy who loved his family, was much loved by his many friends, and whose main priority in life was the pursuit of enjoyment. Pete was a very laid-back kind of guy, who was nearly always late for – well most things, really.
“Pete chose to follow a less academic route at school, preferring to be playing football or having a fag behind the bike sheds with Trev (best friend and lead singer in Pete’s band), rather than studying the three Rs. Having said that, Pete was a very intelligent guy who preferred to channel his energies into the things he enjoyed most, rather than climbing a corporate ladder. He was a very practical and multi-talented person, skilled with tools, in antiques restoration, and more recently in cooking. In recent years he took a course in plumbing which he passed despite causing a minor flood at Stroud College! Pete also loved football and played for numerous local teams over the years. He despised unnecessary rules and bureaucracy, and this prompted him to write a song for his band, Dealer, lambasting the red-tape culture we have to put up with today.
“Pete started riding motorcycles at age seventeen when he bought a BSA Bantam, following sound advice from Paul based on their reliability. Within a fortnight Paul had the engine in bits on the bench after it seized up! Shortly after, Pete bought a Honda! He rode a succession of sports bikes in recent years and was a dedicated supporter with Sarah of the Isle of Man TT races, and they also took part in numerous track days in the UK and in Europe, including one at Donington Park only three weeks ago. He was a highly experienced and natural rider.
“We can all learn a lot about how to approach life by taking a few leaves out of Pete’s book on how to get your priorities right. Pete has left a gaping chasm in so many people’s lives and, with the legacy he has left, he will never be forgotten.
“The family wish to extend heart-felt thanks to the police, in particular to Tom Fletcher, the Family Liaison Officer, the emergency services, all the people who tried to help Pete at the scene, Gloucester Coroner’s Office, and everyone who has sent us their good wishes at this very difficult time.”
